In our daily lives, we can observe that many people’s ideological level has been improved, it mainly find expression in general will and environmental awareness. People no longer attribute the protecting environment and saving energy to the responsibility range of governments, they have been aware of the importance of cultivating the eco-conscious community. Thus people take action immediately, such as using green products, especially, launching the program of LED fluorescent replacement to replace the existing fluorescents which are not energy efficient. Furthermore, some related organizations are also devoted to the promotion of energy conservation, on the one hand, they research LED lights; on the other hand, they promote LED lights.

In a session entitled “State of the industry and market forecast,” Jim Brodrick, lighting program manager at the US Department of Energy (DOE), was the lead speaker at the LEDs 2011 conference in San Diego, CA. Brodrick described applications where LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL) is already succeeding as well as the technology shortcomings that are limiting the usage of LEDs in other applications.

Immediately Brodrick pinpointed the reason for the DOE’s interest in SSL and investment in the technology. Quoting a DOE report issued earlier this year, Brodrick said that LEDs could yield 233 TWh in energy savings per year if LED lights totally replaced legacy sources in a short list of seven lighting applications – enough energy to power 19 million households.

Purpose-built luminaires

Brodrick made a general statement about midway through his presentation that summed up the state of the SSL industry. About LED lighting products, he said, “If you design from a clean sheet of paper, you can come up with products that are really very good.” He added that good designs must address all aspects of a luminaire including LED chips, optics, electronics, thermal management, and mechanical design.

It’s easy to see where Brodrick’s statement applies in readily available products. LED fluorescent tubes intended as replacements for linear fluorescent lamps are still struggling to match the incumbent technology. In contrast, Brodrick said that several LED-based integral luminaires that are designed to replace tube-based troffer fixtures – as opposed to just replacing the tubes – can match or exceed the performance of fluorescent technology.

In general, Brodrick said that SSL is doing extremely well in recessed downlights, outdoor area lights, 2×2-ft troffers (not tube based) and refrigerated-case lights. The technology isn’t doing nearly so well in small retrofit lamps including A lamps, the aforementioned linear-replacement segment, and cove lighting especially in cases where the legacy luminaires utilize fluorescent tubes such as LED fluorescent tubes.

LED retrofit lamps

Brodrick spent more time discussing the problematic applications, acknowledging the continued interest in LED-based 4-ft tubes given the huge installed base of fluorescent troffers. He said the tubes are getting better and beginning to match the efficacy of fluorescents. But light output and distribution remain a problem as directional LEDs aren’t a good match for fluorescent fixtures that were designed for a tube that radiates light around the entire cylinder.

Still, Brodrick said the LED tubes are beginning to work for some applications in terms of light output and cost. Specifically he said that the long life of LEDs make the tubes a fit for hard-to-reach applications. He also said the LED tubes are a good choice where vibration is present or in temperature extremes.

In the area of small replacement lamps including ubiquitous A lamps, Brodrick said that the technology is getting better although he said, “generally they don’t match the output, color quality, and light distribution” of incandescent sources.

Brodrick described a recent DOE test of replacement lamps in which the agency visited eight big-box retail stores in the US and purchased 33 LED fluorescent lamp products to test. He said that most failed to meet basic performance parameters that would satisfy consumers looking to replace incandescent or halogen lamps.

About the retailers, Brodrick said, “Some carry better products than others.” The DOE hasn’t identified the retailers in a publicly-available report, but Brodrick said the DOE had taken up the matter directly with the retailers to discuss the issue of consumer satisfaction with LED fluorescent lamps.

The more and more popularity of LED is the trend in this modern society, on the account of immutable subject that we should save energy and protect the ecology. And we know it is useless that talking without doing, no matter the organizations or individuals. All of them ought to put the notion into practice, and thus some public organizations like the DOE conducted a series of tests on the performance of LED fluorescent tube and LED downlight to improve its energy efficient effect. Owing to their contribution, our energy conservation has reached a new state. Meanwhile, you needn’t concern about the lighting effect will be lowered due to energy saving, the LED personnel won’t miss one aspect and one detail.

Energy on the earth is quite limited and abundant and economical energy is the life blood of modern civilizations. How to make energy consumption more efficient challenges us all. With the population increasing exponentially, we are now facing an intractable problem. After the 2011 Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, nuclear power once considered to be the alternative resources is no longer safe and reliable for us and many nuclear plants have been shut down since then. It is understood by many of us that we should find better ways to make products that are more energy efficient. LED fluorescent tubes are the next generation lighting system and are considered to meet this purpose.

Business Lighting Solutions (BLS) has reported that its LED T8 tube light has been used to replace more than 2100 fluorescent tubes at an Auckland, New Zealand facility that houses Air New Zealand’s engineering operations.

Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED-based tubes has remained a popular concept due to the sheer number of such lamps installed globally. BLS sales director Paul Stoddart said, “Fluorescent bulbs, which are used by most New Zealand businesses, contribute to around 40% of the average office power bill so by replacing them with LEDs a business can literally halve this cost.”

Still, LED-based retrofit lamps haven’t proven capable of producing the same level of light output that the latest fluorescent tubes produce according to numerous US Department of Energy (DOE) tests. In May 2011, the DOE published a detailed report of LED T8 tests in a typical office environment. The results found the SSL products draw less power, but also provide less light on the task plane due in part to the fact that the directional LED sources aren’t a good match to the troffer fixtures designed for omnidirectional fluorescent tubes.

Photometric data

BLS published photometric data on its website that would indicate the LED tubes produce greater light output than do the products that the DOE has tested. The summary test data on the company’s website is ambiguous, but the detailed report states that a single tube produces 2032 lm. That value is calculated based on intensity measured at 5° increments around the lamp. The LED T8s tested in the DOE study produced 1366 to 1539 lm.

The DOE report concluded that T8s would be a viable retrofit choice in applications where an area was overlit. When asked about the relative lighting before and after the New Zealand retrofit, BLS design and technology director Chris Wheatley said “The light projected on the working plane is +/- 2-5% depending on the color temperature and type of fitting.”

BLS is also reporting significantly higher efficacy than DOE tests have documented. The photometric documents on the company’s website indicate a lamp efficacy that’s over 100 lm/W and system efficacy near that value with some fixtures. A look at the DOE reports shows a maximum bare-lamp efficacy of 93 lm/W with significantly-lower system efficacy.

When asked if the DOE had tested BLS products, Wheatley said, “No, to our knowledge they only tested American products and we were not involved. The efficacy of the products tested that I saw were around 70 lm/W whereas we are achieving closer to 100 lm/W. Again this is referenced in the NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia) accredited photometric reports provided.”

LEDs America T8s

BLS isn’t the only LED T8 maker specifying better light output and efficacy than DOE test have revealed. For example, LEDs America claims that its SSL T8 tubes deliver 1400 directional lumens while consuming only 14.6W. That’s close to 100 lm/W efficacy. LEDs America and its sales and distribution partner Viper Networks have announced increased production of the LED-O products over the next two quarters.

The T8-retrofit market will surely continue to draw the interest of lamp makers and electrical contractors as a significant business opportunity. Moreover, as LED T8s continue to improve, the technology could deliver significant global energy savings.

Apparently, LED T8 tube light can be used to save more energy. Environmental pollution and ecological degradation has resulted in economic losses for many countries. These countries represent a major concern for environmental protection because they have high rates of deforestation, ecosystems loss, pollution, and population growth. In recent years, we are glad to see that many LED tubes and LED fluorescent replacement are put into practical use.

ATG iBright LED tubes illuminate Mall Plaza parking lots in Chile

Mall Plaza, the leading comprehensive shopping mall in Chile, has installed ATG iBright™ LED tubes in its parking lots.

The initial project design goals that Mall Plaza sets included reducing energy costs, reducing maintenance costs, upgrading existing lighting levels and increasing visibility. After a test installation of products from several manufacturers, they determined that the ATG iBright™ LED tubes best met the needs for the Parking Garage.

Using 5050 SMD LED and clear lens, iBright™ LED tube can reach a maximized lumen output. It can offer same luminance as the traditional fluorescent tube with only half of the energy consumed.

With UL listed external power supply, iBright™ LED tubes dissipate heat from chip to air quickly and efficiently. Due to the reduction in heat buildup, the life span of the tube increases, and performance stabilizes at an optimal level.

Nutec, the contractor of the project, are very satisfied with the performance of the tubes. “This is one of the most impressive projects I have ever completed. The tube emits pretty comfortable light for both people and vehicles.” the manager said.

“We are satisfied with the result,” said the director of Mall Plaza. “This lighting project not only offers a more secured environment for Garage users but also lead to a significant cost down on energy and maintenance fee. We will continue to use iBright™ LED tubes for the next retrofit project.”

LED tubes now are used in many areas including homes, offices, pubs, hotels and factories. Apart from LED tubes, there are also many other LED-based products that is designed for various purposes. LED downlights, for example, are perfect for improving the work efficiency of the lighting. This Domestic Lighting solution has the potential to reduce energy consumption while delivering substantially greater lighting functionality and an unrivaled durability.

ATG’s eLucent™ DL Series LED Downlights are energy-efficient LED recessed retrofits designed to replace conventional halogen and compact fluorescent (CFL) lights. They are widely used in hospitality, as well as in commercial, and residential locales.

eLucent™ DL Downlights achieve a superlative luminous efficacy of 75lm/W through the utilization of ultra bright SMD LEDs and reflective materials innovated by Japanese companies. Using the current design, junction temperature also remains excellent, at under 50 centigrade thanks to a highly effective heat sink design.

With piano style paint work and frosted anti-glare lenses, eLucent™ DL Downlights project an elegant air, while providing light that is comfortable to the eyes. They are easily installed into their fittings with spring-loaded clips.

eLucent™ DL Downlights come with reliable constant-current external drivers which guarantee reliable and excellent electrical performance.

eLucent™ DL Downlights are available in three dimensions: the eLucent™ DL3 fits into 3 inch fittings; the eLucent™ DL4 fits into 4 inch fittings; and eLucent™ DL6 fits into 6 inch fittings. All models are ETL Listed, ETL No.: 4003329.

eLucent™ DL Series LED Downlights are, from all aspects, one of the best LED lighting offers in the world.

A rapid growth for LED-based lighting in the lighting market shows concerns on energy crisis and environmental protection are ever increasing nowadays. Governments all over the world encourage firms and individuals to use clean energy and find alternative methods to save more energy. LED tube lighting presents many great advantages and is being accepted by more and more people. LED technology is now at its early stage and in the future we may have better lighting conditions with less energy consumed. And now many standards are being set up to regulate the production of the LED products such as LED fluorescent lamps, which makes the LED lighting market more mature. It is reasonable to predict that it won’t take long before LED lighting system take control of the market.

At present, our society is facing the problem of energy shortage, so saving energy no longer just belongs to the task of government, everyone should hold the responsibility for energy conservation cause. First, we should try to use the green products more and more, like the LED lights. Mentioning the LEDs, we think of its strong energy efficient effect immediately, and based on this effect, many parties decide to replace the existing lights with LED lights. Certainly, the LED manufacturers have seen the business opportunity in LED market, so they would devote themselves to the research and development of LED fluorescent tubes.

Market demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions has been rising rapidly, and LED lighting products are the focus for the next-generation of fixtures in architectural, commercial, industrial, and residential lighting. New materials are playing a pivotal role in the optimization of these LED fluorescent replacement lamps and outdoor fixtures, driven by the specific thermal and mechanical needs of LED lighting.

Several different grades of polycarbonate (PC), a type of thermoplastic, have been optimized for use as LED parts including reflectors, diffusers and lenses. PC reflectors provide a diffuse light from LED-based troffers, while PC-based heat sinks and PC lenses with ultraviolet (UV) protection can offer increased design flexibility to the manufacturers of LED fluorescent replacement lamps and luminaires.

Polycarbonate vs. PMMA

The increasing adoption of LED lighting creates applications for polycarbonates that were previously the preserve of materials such as glass and metal. For instance, because LEDs emit “cold” light without infrared (IR) radiation, thermal stress on the lamp components is reduced, making it possible to replace glass lenses with those made of transparent thermoplastics, most notably polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). PC and PMMA have already been applied to LED lamps and luminaires, especially as parts of housings or transparent covers.

PC and PMMA components can be lighter and thinner than glass, and offer design flexibility. In addition, the components have been cost effectively scaled to production volumes using injection-molding processes. Relative to PMMA, polycarbonate benefits from greater heat resistance, higher impact strength and increased resistance to breakage. PC is also more flame-retardant. Benefits of PMMA over PC include its higher light transmission (> 92%) and better resistance to UV radiation.

Special grades of PC have a light transmission in the visible-wavelength range just under 90%, but they absorb radiation in the UV as well as mid- and far-IR regions. UV exposure will damage standard grades of PC, resulting in an increasing yellowness that impairs the transparency of lenses and covers for lighting fixtures. To counter this phenomenon, a new infusion process has been developed to concentrate UV protection at the surface of PC products (see sidebar).

PC lenses

If PC is to be used in LED lenses, its optical properties must remain unchanged after long-term exposure to LED light. Testing has been performed on 4-mm thick polycarbonate lenses exposed to commercial LED lighting with an intensity of 46 lumens per square centimeter for over 6000 hours at 90°C. Light transmission, clouding and yellowing values (yellowness index, ASTM E 313) changed little under these conditions.

A further advantage to polycarbonate in lens applications is its high refractive index, which allows thinner lenses to be fabricated. Bayer MaterialScience offers several polycarbonate grades that differ in viscosity, color and degree of UV protection, but transmission remains a function of PC thickness (Fig. 2).

PC grades can also be optimized for flame-retardant characteristics. For example, TerraGlo’s Alba Series of luminaires (Fig. 3) are designed with the driver circuitry and LED board underneath the fixture enclosure. As a result, the fixtures needed an enclosure material that was rated to the flammability standard UL94 5VA. The company selected a 3-mm transparent lens cover made from Makrolon FR7087 polycarbonate. The material has been tested by UL including glow-wire flammability and ignition testing.

Diffusers and reflectors

Often, a diffusing effect is needed to evenly distribute the light emitted by LEDs – to reduce glare or provide even backlighting. With PC, there are two ways to achieve a diffusing effect. The material can be made translucent by incorporating appropriate additives. In this case, diffusion strength and transmission depend greatly on the additive type and concentration. Alternatively, irregular, satined surface structures (grain size of 10 µm) can diffuse light due to refraction.

The diffusing effect is measured by using a goniophotometer to determine the half-value angle as defined in DIN 58161. This corresponds to the reflecting angle at which the luminance has fallen to half the light intensity passing through in a straight line from the diffuser component. The larger the half-value angle, the higher the light diffusion.

Every thing happens for a reason, just like LEDs, the popular of LED fluorescent lamp depends on its good performance, for example the materials of LED fluorescent lamps are lighter and thinner, so the whole light owns great flexibility, and the users will feel more smoothly while they are installing the light. On the other hand, the feature of saving energy of LEDs is too significant to ignore, this important function not only helps us to save the power rate, but also slows down the problem of power shortage for the society and whole world, this is the true meaning of promoting LEDs.

Biodiversity is an important global issue. Unfortunately, we are now in a biodiversity crisis. We ignored the widespread value of the biodiversity and upset the balance of nature, decreasing our quality of life and endangering the future of our children. To make matters worse, if unchecked, we are moving towards dangerous tipping points where damage to ecosystems will become irreversible. We have to change the way we usually did in the past to reduce the negative effects caused by human activities. For example, bright lights make the birds have trouble to migrate. In order to make the planet habitable for all living things, people begin to realize the value of green products. Thanks to the modern technology, we now have a variety of products that is eco-friendly. Even light goes green. LED lighting products, such as LED T8 light, LED fluorescent lamps and LED tubes, are recognized to be the replacement of the non-green lighting system.

The US DOE has published a report that estimates the broad deployment of LED tube lighting such as LED T8 light could reduce energy consumption by nearly half by 2030, assuming roadmap targets for performance and price can be met.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released an update of its report that forecasts the energy-savings potential of solid-state lighting (SSL) compared with conventional white-light sources. The 2012 update entitled “Energy Savings Potential of Solid-State Lighting in General Illumination Application,” compares the annual lighting energy consumption in the US with and without market penetration of LED tube lighting beyond current levels. A PDF of the DOE’s report can be downloaded at www.ssl.energy.gov/tech_reports.html.

The cumulative energy-savings potential from the predicted LED market penetration over the 2010-2030 study periods is 2700 TWh, a savings of $250 billion at today’s energy prices or the equivalent of 1800 million metric tons of carbon. This is in comparison to the 1800 TWh of savings estimated in the 2010 report of energy-savings potential. However, several significant changes were made to the study’s methodology and assumptions for the latest report, which are discussed below.

The forecast predicts that by 2020, LED lamps and luminaires will have primarily penetrated the commercial and outdoor stationary applications. Proliferation into residential, industrial, commercial and outdoor stationary markets will occur in the 2020-2030 timeframe.

The forecast projects LED lamp and luminaire sales measured in lumen-hours. The analysis indicates that LED lighting in general illumination applications has the potential to represent 36% of sales measured in lumen-hours on the general illumination market by 2020 and 74% of sales by 2030.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the US consumed 694 TWh of site electricity in 2010 on lighting – approximately 18% of all electricity used. The model demonstrates the total energy consumption for lighting could be reduced by 19% by 2020 and by 46% by 2030 relative to a scenario with no additional LED lamps or luminaires beyond what is installed today.

By 2030, the annual energy savings from market penetration of LEDs will be approximately 297 TWh, enough electricity to power 24 million homes. At current energy prices, that equates to $30 billion in savings in the year 2030. Assuming the same mix of power stations, these savings, according to the report, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 210 million metric tons of carbon in 2030.

New, improved study

The DOE has published this report four times, in 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2010. Several important changes to the 2010 methodology have been implemented. First, the 2010 baseline data now uses the DOE’s recently published 2010 US Lighting Market Characterization (2010 LMC) inventory report. That report showed that 67 million LED lamps and luminaires were installed in the US in 2010, accounting for 0.8% of the total.

Secondly, the energy-savings report only considers LED technology and not OLEDs, due to the speculative nature of efficacy projections and price forecasts for OLED luminaires. All energy savings are assumed to be due to LED technology and its improvements.

The model includes lighting in residential, commercial, industrial and outdoor stationary applications. The previous reports then grouped lamps by high- and low-CRI application. Now the lamps are grouped by submarket in which different technologies compete, including five categories: general service lamps (medium screw base), reflector lamps (screw base), HID, linear fluorescent and miscellaneous.

Performance, price, lifetime targets

An econometric model used in the analysis relies on assumptions of efficacy, retail price and operating life. These estimates were based on work conducted collaboratively by the DOE and industry experts, including members of the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance, an SSL technical working group managed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.

LED performance assumptions are based on the DOE’s SSL R&D multiyear program plan (MYPP) and its SSL R&D manufacturing roadmap through 2020. Values for 2030 were extrapolated based on the prevailing trend. LED lamps and luminaires were modeled separately, which was not done in previous studies. The model assumes an average efficacy of 37 lm/W for an LED lamp and 70 lm/W for an LED luminaire in 2010, which is expected to increase to 182 lm/W and 193 lm/W, respectively, in 2020 and 203 lm/W for both product types in 2030.

The model assumes the price (in $/klm) for LED lamps will decrease from $55.16/klm in 2010 to $6.28/klm in 2020 and to $3.34/klm in 2030. For LED luminaires, price is expected to drop from $180.88/klm in 2010 to $23.69/klm in 2020 and to $12.73/klm in 2030.

The report noted that the best LED lamps and indoor luminaires have lifetimes in the 25,000-hour range, while outdoor luminaires have lifetimes of 50,000 hours. These lifetimes are expected to increase to 50,000 hours for LED lamps and indoor luminaires by approximately 2020, and to 75,000 for outdoor luminaires by approximately 2020, when both lifetime estimates hit a plateau.

The model of adoption rate of LED technology considers both first cost of LED lamps and luminaires as well as annual maintenance and operating cost, which together represent life-cycle cost.

By 2030, the energy-savings potential is greatest in the commercial sector, followed by the residential sector, which contribute 37% and 34% to the total energy savings. Outdoor stationary applications make up the next largest sector, at 25% and industrial makes up 4% of the total. A breakdown of forecasted savings in 2030 shows that the replacement of linear florescent lamps in commercial applications, HID in outdoor applications and incandescent bulbs in residential applications representing some of the most significant opportunities for energy savings from LED implementation.

LED products nowadays become popular among us because of its better performance and efficient energy consumption. It can be seen from many reports that LED-based lighting system take a steady growth in the market and LED tubes leading the market seems to be an inevitable trend. LED technology explains to us that science is a double-edged sword.

Strategies Unlimited has reported 69% year-on-year growth in total sales of LED lamps and luminaires, and expects further growth in the next few years for LED lighting products and LED components for lighting.Despite a decline in the overall market for lighting products in 2011, the LED lighting market (including LED T8 tube light, LED fluorescent tubes and LED luminaires) had an exceptionally good year in 2011, growing by 69% year-on-year.

Vrinda Bhandarkar, Director of Research for LED Lighting with market-research firm Strategies Unlimited, said that the total revenue from the LED lighting market was $5.5 billion in 2010 and $9.4 billion in 2011.

The results were presented during the Solid State Lighting Investor Forum at Strategies in Light 2012, which opened today.

Moreover, the LED lighting market is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20% from 2011 to 2016.

Commercial and industrial lighting was the biggest growth sector. Bhandarkar said that almost 23 million LED-based downlights were sold worldwide during 2011.

Compared with previous forecasts, the growth in sales of LED lamps has been scaled back, since the products are still expensive and alternatives are available.

Many high-tech corporations and universities show great interest in this emerging technology. And many researches and experiments have been taken to improve the LED lighting system. ATG Electronics is one of the famous LED tube suppliers. With the help of its strong R&D team, ATG offers many top-performance LED products. The iBright™ E68i T8 LED Tube is one of its latest great products.

iBright™ E68i T8 LED Tube is the latest LED-based T8 tube in the ATG Electronics product lineup. It combines numerous practical and technical advantages in one product and is rightly considered the best solution on the market for the replacement of conventional fluorescent tubes.

According to the LM79 report from a third-party, UL/cUL-approved lab, the iBright™ E68i has a luminous efficacy of 90 lm/W, excellent for a product in this category. The maximum lumen output at 1.2 m (4ft) is 1650 lm, while power consumption is a mere 17 Watts. Bright, effective lighting and low energy cost are combined in the iBright™ E68i.

The iBright™ E68i comes with a stable UL listed external power supply which reduces heat buildup and extends the life span of the entire lighting system.

The benefits of LED T8 tube light are:

- High luminous efficacy (90lm/W);

- High luminous flux (1.2m, Typ.1600lm );

- Low power consumption (1.2m, Typ.17W);

- Maximum lumen output with clear lens;

- Stable performance with external power supply;

- Excellent color quality and good heat dissipation;

- Minimum maintenance costs;

- Green and eco-friendly lighting source without mercury used.

As we can see from the above statistics, we have reasons to believe that LED light such as LED T8 tube light will have a promising future because of its significant advantages. However, we cannot be overly-optimistic. Through human activities, genetic diversity is lost, species go extinct, and ecosystems are degraded and polluted. If we can’t find effective measures to address the overall conditions, we may now push these remaining natural ecosystems towards tipping points beyond which they collapse into a state of much diminished productivity which is almost irreversible. This happened to the cod fisheries off the east coast of Canada, and may soon happen to most fisheries of the world with fish being replaced by jellyfish and other less palatable species. LED tube lighting and LED fluorescent replacement are only the beginning and we still have a long way to go before the balance of the ecosystem retrieved to its original fine status.

Energy crisis is always an interesting topic. It is widely accepted that the resources and energy on earth are quite limited. And throughout the years, we have experienced many energy crises and reached the consensus that each and everyone of us should shoulder our responsibilities to preserve natural resources not only for ourselves but also for the next generation. However, it is unreasonable to abandon the modern technology so as to reach this goal. What we should do is to apply the proper technology to make energy consumption more efficiently. LED tube lighting offered by LED tube suppliers can best illustrate this point. Its highly efficient performance makes it easier to achieve more with less energy consumed. In the near future, we may even find alternative methods to replace the traditional resources.

Multi touch technology now develops quickly. Almost every person one of these products, such as mobile phone and so on. Android is the open mobile devices comprehensive platform, it brings so many benefits to the mobile phone users, most people said since their mobile phones had installed the android system, they felt the performance of their mobile phones became strong obviously. Among the various benefits, android has the high recognition technology for the hand input, it can help the mobile phone recognize the words that inputted by users more quickly, it means the touchscreen with the android is more sensitive to the character recognition. However the development of android will not stop here, the built-in voice search of android attracts people’s eyes.
The case for talking to your Google TV
Not only is Google TV built around an x86 port of Android, but the product has a few features that make it a much better fit for a voice interface than the phones with which it shares a code base.
First, you’ll be talking to (or yelling at) your TV in the seclusion of your living room. So no worries about freaked-out passers-by, although kids and pets may initially wonder why you’re talking at the TV when there’s no sports game on.
It’s also the case that it’s much easier to control ambient noise and environmental sounds in the living room than it is on the street or in some other public venue. Admittedly, screaming children or barking dogs may frustrate your attempts to bring up that YouTube video using voice input, but people for whom this is a huge problem will always have the option of pulling their keyboard off the coffee table and typing in their search string.
So far, voice input has been limited to controlling device operations via commands (this is true with Kinect, as well), but it doesn’t make sense to use voice for everything interface-related-you need it only in situations where you have to input a string of text. So you can keep your normal remote for tasks like controlling the volume, or selecting a chapter on a Blu-ray disc, and save the voice input for moments when it can add to the home theater experience.
The final way that voice is a better fit for a Google TV than it is for a Google phone comes from the fact that an Android-powered TV will have an always-on, broadband connection to the Internet. Google’s voice recognition is all done on the server side-your Android phone just takes a recording of your voice, does some preprocessing, then sends the waveform up to Google’s servers for analysis. The server then sends back its interpretation of what you just said in the form of a text string.
This server-based design means that Android’s voice input just doesn’t work if you’re in a cellular dead zone. But dead zones aren’t a problem for Google TV. So your Google TV could theoretically grab your audio input, see touchscreen, and get a text string back much more quickly, cheaply, and consistently than your Android phone.
Nothing’s perfect
The main logistical issue that will have to be overcome before voice input could work on a TV is microphone placement. If the mic is on your TV, and is across the room from your mouth, the voice recognition probably won’t work very well. Or, to make it work, you may have to do a ton of pre-processing to isolate the signal from the noise.
Note that Google actually did a Google TV voice control demo at Google I/O using a phone for the mic. A company rep talked into an Android phone, which then sent the voice input to the TV. Such a feature in a finished TV product would make a nice value-add for those with Android phones, but Google needs to take the concept and make it cheaper.
It seems technically feasible that the mic could just go on the remote control, especially if the remote is Bluetooth-enabled and can do audio transmission. That way, when you’re faced with a text input box, you just hold your remote up to your mouth and talk into it. This may seem like an odd suggestion, but it’s no odder than the sight of someone yelling voice commands at their TV from 12 feet away.
You may be thinking that accidental triggering of voice commands would be a problem, but this really shouldn’t be an issue. All you need is a button, probably on the remote, that you press to tell the TV, “hey, I’m talking to you.” After all, this is how voice input works on Android phones-before the phone starts listening for voice commands, you have to press the right on-screen button.
The next step: gestures
Once TVs get really smart, and contain the kind of multicore silicon that powers desktops today, they’ll be ready for gesture-based input. Microsoft’s Kinect product puts the software maker ahead of the game in this area, but others are hot on its heels.
Intel is actively researching gestures as an input mechanism, and the company showed off the progress of one of its partners at this past IDF. The GestureTek demo was quite nice; it managed an attractive and functional multi touch-style interface using only gestures.
While our lives become more and more comfortable and convenience, we should appreciate the contribution of the scientists, the very fact of their sweat and efforts promote the development of the society. In the media and communication areas, there is so great progress that had been seen by us, we transform the key operation to touchscreen operation gradually, the first time we touched the multi touch wall, and we can feel the power of the science. All in all, the scientists will take efforts to do better in the multi touch technology.

Nowadays, everyone advocate protecting our environment. And the products should also be very healthy. Today ,the products which have been brought to the energy-saving attestation up to 30 kinds , such as domestic appliance , heating / refrigeration equipment’s , electrical products and lighting etc. At present, the most products in Chinese market is led t8 light, including CEL, RLF, and traffic signal lamps and indicating lamps. A few days ago, Energy star held a theme about led tubes t8 to carry out the green Illumination Planning and Application.

If you did missed something, did not and you can count on LEDs Magazine to bring the latest product news from Light fair on the website and in an upcoming feature article. LEDs Magazine’s Maury Wright has covered the floor like a cross-country marathoner over the last 2 days and will be today as well, compiling interviews and reports, while combing through announcements and releases and attending press conferences and events.

Anecdotally, I overheard a manufacturer inquiring as to whether he could find a halogen MR16 on the floor to compare to his LED equivalent. With LED presence ever on the rise at Light fair, finding “conventional” technology is definitely a chore. However, in 2005 at Light fair, that same person would have likely not found much LED, especially an LED MR16.

Intertie’s Todd Strake made 3 informative presentations; 2 giving a update regarding the changes to Energy Star criteria, also highlighting the Lighting Facts program, and the other regarding the UL certification of LED T8 tube light. While the Intertie presentations dealt with the certification and criteria in both topics, both issues are still rather controversial. Energy Star confusion is mounting again. As previously report in The Daily Light fair, some LED luminaire manufacturers may be starting over again. Adding to this Osama Optus’s Dr. Jiao, presenter at the standards review workshop, stated that some products currently qualified may not qualify with respect to the new criteria and may have to re-qualify.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invites attendees to meet with the Energy Star Lighting Team at Light fair in Booth #536. The Energy Star Lighting Team will be available to discuss current program activities, such as the most recently released Energy Star Program Requirements for Luminaires Draft 1 Version 1.0, the Energy Star lighting integration plan and lighting product qualification processes.
On the topic of LED T8 , during his luncheon keynote presentation on Tuesday, the DOE’s Jim Broderick again reinforced that this product has not demonstrated the performance necessary to be regarded as a serious contender with respect to luminous efficacy, lifetime and definitely cost.

Attendees learned what was happening back in the ‘Big Apple’ as Margaret Newman presented ‘Transforming New York City Streetscapes’ with Marc Ledbetter from PNNL, who manages the DOE Gateway Demonstration Program and Philip Jessup from The Climate Group, facilitator of the global Light Savers Program. All panel lists dealing with the New York LED piloting presented their respective observations and conclusions to date. Issues in LED outdoor lighting are not always technically related. Marc Ledbetter revealed the ‘dirt’ on depreciation, as dirt itself reduces light output and must be considered. As LED requires less replacement maintenance, dirt build-up due to lesser frequent cleaning from not making the more frequent current technology lamp replacement is an issue. Ledbetter also noted that wind can play a role in tripping sensors that are intended to only react to the presence of people or vehicles in attempting to control lighting when not in use at full levels. Ledbetter also reinforced that everyone benefits from good analysis, while everyone suffers when I is poorly done.

Recapping some previous industry media events, on Wednesday, Nexus unveiled is new Array Par 38 lamp and GE gave an overview of its direction in replacement lamp products. Attendees to the GE event heard that we would not see the ‘birth’ of the high-efficiency incandescent lamp from GE.

At a Taxon/Osama Sylvania event, Rick Lealman, Osama Sylvania President and CEO discussed his company’s announcement earlier in the day to launch the first 75-watt, A-line LED retrofit, the brightest LED T8 tube light on the market according to Lealman. Lealman displayed the 60-watt version of that bulb at the event.

LEDs Magazine will bring you a review of the LED-related projects receiving recognition at the GE Edison Awards held on Tuesday evening and the 27th Annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards Presentations, held Thursday evening.

Events on Friday

The DOE training schedule with free tutorial sessions continues today in their booth (#2121). Due to the shorter day, today’s shorter schedule is:
10:00 am – Getting Involved with DOE SSL Commercialization Programs
10:30 am – Solid-State Lighting Basics
11:00 am – CALIPER Testing Update
11:30 am – How to Reduce the Risks of Specifying LEDs The Beta LED Tech Break free seminars hosted by Beta LED and Ruud Lighting continue today in Booth #1031. Also due to the shorter day, today’s shorter schedule is:
9:30 am – LED vs. Induction
11:00 am – Five Tips to a Fair Comparison
12:30 pm – Great Expectations / Great Applications
2:00 pm – Have you considered solar?

Today’s must-see presentations

8:30 are – Edison Was Right: DC Optimized Lighting Grids Can Save Power

Alternating current (AC) is the global standard for electrical lighting today. Yet, today’s AC mains have not served as an effective medium for digital communications, and attempts to communicate on AC wiring have proven to be difficult, complex, and unreliable. Yet, LED lighting requires DC current, which could also provide a unique “network” to interconnect lights. The vision is to transform lighting spaces by integrating a DC grid to optimize how lights are controlled, dimmed, and managed. This digital systems’ approach to lighting could dramatically improve energy efficiency, and deliver a finer-grained, enhanced lighting space.

8:30 am – Taking Best Practices to the Mainstream

The pressures of climate change have made sustainable buildings a necessity. Must we compromise lighting quality or will we leapfrog into an improved mainstream approach? The USDOE Commercial Lighting Solutions help A&E teams and end users by providing best practice guidance via an interactive web tool that measures energy savings and provides actionable implementation guidance. Nationally known IALD lighting designers developed the solutions using high performance commercial products, day lighting and controls. GSA has stepped up to the challenge by using these solutions as the basis for their relighting projects under the Recovery Act.
There must be some divergence between energy-saving and lighting criteria, so it is very important to make the two in balance and in harmony. In other words, our purpose is environmental protection and energy-saving, but in the meanwhile, we ought to meet the requirements of sufficient lighting in offices, entertainment centers, restaurants, factories and other places. This mind of led tube suppliers make us thought this question. In addition, although LED T8 lighting had been up to the environmental standard, all personnel would continue to improve it to satisfy the customers’ demands. The led t8 light will be produced more perfect and for the purpose to satisfied people’s need.

Now people also like 3D movies, these pictures like showing in front of our face. Why the 3D technology is very popular today? The popularity of tablet computer embodies the extensive application of 3D technology, indeed, 3D technology brings us too many benefits and conveniences, however the science will never stop its steps, in Sunnyvale California, GestureTEK announces the launch of Mastro3D SDK and licenses, the Mastro3D is very marvelous, it can track people’s gesture in free space with 3D depth camera, in other words, it can detect multiple data points on the user’s body to create the realistic environment for users, so the users can interact with the touchscreen. This feeling is very amazing, we should appreciate the contribution of the scientists, the very fact of their efforts give us the magical science fiction world.
ver 10 years ago GestureTek invented Video Gesture Control using 3D cameras, and has been using it in dynamic custom installations for its Fortune 500 customers. This robust tracking software has now been bundled and made available as an SDK.
The multi-patented GestPoint Maestro3D software functions with all the available 3D cameras on the market including Microsoft’s Kinect. The SDK package has a number of tracking paradigms as well as a gesture library to allow for the variety of ways that an interactive 3D gesture system can be used in both public and private spaces.
The Maestro3D Hand Tracker is for specific point and control scenarios in public digital signage, boardroom or classroom presentation, etc. It allows the developer to quickly and simply create a fixed 3D tracking area of any size, in free space, and choose precisely where that tracking area will be positioned in front of the screen or camera, with pixel accuracy. It will track the (x,y,z) position of up to 10 hands that enter that space in real time. This allows for Multi-user 3D tracking applications to optimize interaction in high traffic environments.
The Maestro3D Hand Tracker interface allows you to control everything from the Desktop, to onscreen objects, cursor control, or navigation, by tracking hand gestures in a configurable region in front of any screen. The tracking distance can be as great as 10 feet from the screen. Other 3D gesture tracking systems that have appeared on the market require the user to stand still for a given amount of time in a certain position in order to “register” the user to be tracked. Maestro3D does not require this, and responds instantly when users point towards the screen in a digital signage environment.
The Maestro3D Multi-Tracker detects multiple data points on the user’s body (head, torso and hands) enabling more dynamic 3D gesture tracking as well as the creation of Immersive full-body representations, and aspects of avatar control. The system comes with a dynamic library of gestures that includes recognizing circles and swipes gestures, and supports multi touch activities such as scrolling, enlarging, or rotating items. This tracker connects directly to Adobe Flash and provides other interfaces for a variety of programmer models.
The GestPoint Maestro3D SDK enables any developer to create their own interactive applications for touch-less control of displays, digital signage and consumer electronic devices.

Now, government shows their positive attitude to the LED tube suppliers. They think highly of their products and very concern about the survey .According to the survey, the consumption of LED products in the Chinese market has occupied 46 percent of the global consumptions in 2009, the LED market in China has enormous potential. In order to promote the progress of led t8 light market, Chinese central and provincial governments, are aggressively developing their own internal markets for high-quality, high-brightness, white-lighting applications and launched the plan of 21 City, 10,000 LED tube Lights, a national demonstration project about household lighting. All the LED tube suppliers realized its importance and actively supported the task of the government, they knew the products is the essential for the market.
Tianjin: A variety of outdoor LED demonstration projects were undertaken in 2010 on the Tianjin Polytechnic University campus (see photo) and on the city’s streets, as well as many indoor installations, totaling 110,000 lighting fixtures.
Hangzhou, Zhejiang province: An outdoor demonstration was undertaken of LED luminaires along 21 km of the Jinghang or Grand Canal and in the vicinity of West Lake. A total of 65,000 outdoor and indoor LED lamps were installed.
Dongguan, Guangdong province: Demonstration of 20,000 LED street lights on a variety of streets, supplied by local firm Kingsun Optoelectronic, one of China’s oldest LED product manufacturers.
Shanghai: Support for LED street-light demonstrations at the Shanghai World Expo site, including the China Pavilion and a wide variety of streets near the Expo, as well as public spaces and landscape applications.
Shenzhen, Guangdong province: Installation of 10,000 LED luminaires along 130 km of expressway and tunnels, one of the largest highway LED retrofit projects in China.
The “21 City, 10,000 LED tube Lights” project was reportedly hampered by LED product-quality issues. Failure rates of 70% and annual lumen depreciation as high as 30% in some locales have been reported anecdotally. Hence, the project slowed in 2011 to allow time for evaluation by the China Solid-State Lighting Alliance (CSA). Key problems identified by the CSA’s study were:
• Municipal governments found it difficult to implement the programs. Financial subsidies from central government were low, and restricted to the LED companies.
• Technical assessment of the products offered by local companies and site applications was often insufficient, leading to a mismatch between the product and its application.
• Quality standards, LED procurement specifications, and project management processes were lacking. National LED tube lighting standards were still in development when the program unfolded.
• Business modeling was challenging, due to underestimated maintenance costs associated with non-standardized products and extensive product failures.
• Low electricity prices and high LED costs extended payback periods under ideal conditions to eight years or more in many cities.
• A dearth of energy-service companies in China with strong financial expertise in energy-efficiency technologies made it difficult for municipal governments to raise adequate funding.
• Regional trade-protection barriers within China prevented quality products from being used in many cities.
Major recommendations coming out of CSA’s review included creating national LED evaluation criteria; setting up quality-control systems; providing central-government subsidies to local governments; implementing better coordination among central government’s agencies; improving LED T8 tube light manufacturing processes; and supporting further R&D. After the review, the Ministry expanded the program to a second group of 16 cities in 2011.
Guangdon leadership
Despite the early problems encountered, demonstration projects undertaken by cities in Guangdong province proved very successful. This was due to the implementation of rigorous technical requirements and standards associated with the energy management contract (EMC) business model pioneered in China by these cities.
Under the EMC model, banks provide project financing to the cities to cover third-party testing data, feasibility analysis, street reconstruction, and light sources. The loans are repaid from energy savings over a six-year period, which involves periodic field monitoring. Typically, 10% of the project cost is subsidized by Guangdong province, 15% by the municipal government, and the remaining 75% financed through the EMC with an energy-service company.
Guangdong’s leadership in LEDs is driven by the importance of the technology to the province’s economy. Companies located in the province supplied 70% of China’s LED packages in 2010, with foreign investment approaching $1.5 billion in local LED firms, much of it centered in Shenzhen’s Special Economic Zone.
In order to maintain this momentum, Guangdong relies on aggregating local procurement to expand the provincial market for locally-produced LED luminaire products. As of the end of 2011, 200,000 streetlight luminaires had been installed on 2,000 km of provincial streets and roads, including 100,000 units in the capital, Guangzhou (see also page 8). Installation of another three million LED street lights is planned soon.
China now is implementing the 12th Five-Year Plan, for the purpose of fulfilling the green lighting plan, the LED tube lighting application becomes the key focus of the government, at the moment, it has achieved some progresses that mainly find expression in the amount of LED installation. In 2010, approximately 350,000 LED street lights were installed in Chinese cities, 74% of the global total, according to Strategies Unlimited. With the protection of government, customers can trust their goods; also the led tube suppliers assure the quality of the products.

Do you like telephones? Do you like playing games? Do you like following the trend? The multi touch, as its name suggests, it refers to a new technology that the computer users can control the graphical interfaces with multi fingers at the same time, this technology is opposed to the single touch technology. And the single touch technology has emerged for a long time, as small as the touch-controlled mobile phone, or as big as the ATM cash point, all these are the equipments with the single touch technology. Since the inauguration of multi touch, the products with high technology bring us many surprises, this technology represents that our science and technology have advanced a big step forward.
Touchscreen monitors have become more and more commonplace as their price has steadily dropped over the past decade. There are three basic systems that are used to recognize a person’s touch:
Resistive
Capacitive
Surface acoustic wave
The resistive system consists of a normal glass panel that is covered with a conductive and a resistive metallic layer. These two layers are held apart by spacers, and a scratch-resistant layer is placed on top of the whole setup. An electrical current runs through the two layers while the monitor is operational. When a user touches the screen, the two layers make contact in that exact spot. The change in the electrical field is noted and the coordinates of the point of contact are calculated by the computer. Once the coordinates are known, a special driver translates the touch into something that the operating system can understand, much as a computer mouse driver translates a mouse’s movements into a click or a drag.
In the capacitive system, a layer that stores electrical charge is placed on the glass panel of the monitor. When a user touches the monitor with his or her finger, some of the charge is transferred to the user, so the charge on the capacitive layer decreases. This decrease is measured in circuits located at each corner of the monitor. The computer calculates, from the relative differences in charge at each corner, exactly where the touchscreen took place and then relays that information to the touchscreen driver software. One advantage that the capacitive system has over the resistive system is that it transmits almost 90 percent of the light from the monitor, whereas the resistive system only transmits about 75 percent. This gives the capacitive system a much clearer picture than the resistive system.
On the monitor of a surface acoustic wave system, two transducers (one receiving and one sending) are placed along the x and y axes of the monitor’s glass plate. Also placed on the glass are reflectors — they reflect an electrical signal sent from one transducer to the other. The receiving transducer is able to tell if the wave has been disturbed by a touch event at any instant, and can locate it accordingly. The wave setup has no metallic layers on the screen, allowing for 100-percent light throughput and perfect image clarity. This makes the surface acoustic wave system best for displaying detailed graphics (both other systems have significant degradation in clarity).
Another area in which the systems differ is in which stimuli will register as a touch event. A resistive system registers a touch as long as the two layers make contact, which means that it doesn’t matter if you touch it with your finger or a rubber ball. A capacitive system, on the other hand, must have a conductive input, usually your finger, in order to register a touch. The surface acoustic wave system works much like the resistive system, allowing a touch with almost any object — except hard and small objects like a pen tip.

As far as price, the resistive system is the cheapest; its clarity is the lowest of the three, and its layers can be damaged by sharp objects. The surface acoustic wave setup is usually the most expensive.
From the above report, we are informed of the ultimate principle of the multi touch wall, that a special driver translates the touch into something that the operating system can understand, because of its sensibility, it is obvious that the technology should be very accurate, so as not to cause the last information to be inaccurate. In addition, this technology is not only limited to the multi touch equipment, such as multi touch wall, but also initiates the development of the related equipments, so it’s very significant for the industry of science and technology, and since its emergence, people have entered into the life of high technology across the board. So we can see in the last decades ,multi touch products will in the competition line to do better forever.
